Stick to campgrounds for your first trip. Introduce children to heavy woods slowly.
Use common sense. Keep dangerous objects (knives, fishing hooks, matches) out of the reach of children. Warn kids to stay away from campfires and barbecue pits where the embers may remain hot even after the fire is out.
Give everyone a whistle. Use it to signal each other if you get separated.
Insist that each child carry a flashlight after dark.
Hike with one adult at the head of the brood and one behind. Bob Schultz, the American Camping Association public relations director, suggests that you make periodic head counts and carry supplies such as a first-aid kit, fresh water, bug spray, sunscreen and a raincoat.
Never let kids swim unsupervised. And since it's hard to determine the depth of rivers and lakes, be sure each child has a flotation device.
Wear life preservers when boating, rafting or canoeing. Place any valuables in airtight, floatable container.
Forbid any animal feeding or petting. Unless you're at a petting zoo, animals are likely to bite. Allow children to watch animals from a safe distance. Make a project of seeking animal tracks in dirt or sand, but avoid bothering the animals.
