Black Hills Playhouse Presents: Come From Away
Starts: 07/19/2026 - Ends: 08/02/2026
THE STORY: Come from Away is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from around the globe, were diverted to Gander's airstrip on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar, and the recognition that we're all part of a global family.Rating: Ages 10+, language, brief adult moments, and mature topics, including discussion of events surrounding 9/11Showtimes:

Hot Air Balloon Launch at The Stratobowl
Starts: 09/11/2026 - Ends: 09/13/2026
The Stratobowl Rim Trailhead offers a beautiful 1-2 mile hike with incredible views and aerospace history. It was the liftoff site for record-breaking balloon flights by the Army Air Corps and National Geographic Society in 1934, where the pilots became the first humans to view the curvature of the Earth. At the time, over 20,000 people gathered to witness the launch of these record-breaking flights!
Today, the Stratobowl hosts 10-12 balloonists from all over the U.S. in an annual launch paying tribute to this early chapter of space exploration and balloon flight. Over an entire weekend, visitors gather from all over to take in the breathtaking sight of these balloons taking to the sky at sunrise. Plan to arrive early and prepare for a short hike along the Stratobowl Rim Trail to reach the ideal vantage point. Bring flashlights, blankets, chairs, and wear layers as September mornings can be chilly. This event is free of charge, but there are no vendors or bathrooms on-site, so pack snacks and drinks and be sure to practice "leave no trace" principles when the event concludes.
The Stratobowl is only 30 minutes from the Hill City / Needles Highway KOA, with fun stops along the way like the Cosmos Mystery Area. Book your stay and enjoy the start of fall in the beautiful Black Hills!
