102nd Annual Zozobra Event! The burning of the Zozobra (aka Old Man of Gloom), a 50 ft tall marionette is presented every year by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe. One of Santa Fe's unique cultural traditions began in 1924, when artist Will Shuster conceived of a giant "Old Man Gloom" effigy stuffed with people's written hardships of the previous year. The 50 foot tall papier-mache puppet is torched annually after a ceremony of fire dancing and music. This powerfully symbolizes the purging of undesirable experiences of the people in attendance.
